B + E / AAA = MERCURY
This is the forearm of Bett Williams. Bett and Emily Stern are writers, visionaries, and lovers in Santa Fe, NM, and the first people to mark themselves with MERCURY marks
that I know of, and in fact I think truly the first ones at all, and this is not to say that MERCURY is the origin of these marks, for it is not, but it is the only place that I know of where they are living together in such a way. E and B were on the brink of falling in love with each other when I met them this spring.
I think that’s Bett’s right arm. Emily has a star on each foot. That makes three stars between them.
When I was excavating the symbologies in MERCURY their beauty was so stately and so succinct to me that I knew, or at least I said I knew that people would tattoo themselves with them. But it was such a surprise, and such a thrill, to see some of these photographs on my phone maybe a month ago, before the galleys of the book had even been printed, Bett and Emily at the tattoo parlor one night. And it is an honor that an ancient emblem that MERCURY enfolds is now animated upon the living bodies of two people I love, who love one another, and who incidentally though I don’t need to say it are beautiful in visible and invisible and paravisible ways, and we all upon this earth, right now together.
